Cornish Art for the Modern Home

16th September 2022

An art mecca

Cornwall has long been a honeypot for artists and art lovers alike. The spectacular landscape, alluring natural light, and ever-changing seas are a huge inspiration to our talented artists – and exactly why so many choose to settle and create artwork in the warm climes of Cornwall.

World-class art galleries can be found throughout Cornwall’s towns and villages, and Cornwall is home to one of Britain’s four iconic Tate galleries – Tate St Ives, which draws hundreds of thousands of visitors each year.

This week, Shop Cornish has curated a phenomenal collection of Cornish artwork from seven leading artists. These exceptional finds are sure to transform your home from spiritless to stand out.

Playful and fun

We’re loving Niko Brown’s Jolly Lolly Sticks. These cheerful fused glass rainbow lollies are mounted in a handmade white frame and spread a little happiness wherever hung. From children’s bedrooms to grown-up living spaces, Niko’s work sparks memories of happy summer days – no matter your age. Lovingly made in Niko’s garden studio, each piece comes hand signed and is wonderfully Cornish.

Ethical and sustainable Cornish art

Award-winning handmade tile producer, Mel Chambers from Alchemy Tiles makes the most incredible trivets from her exquisite freehand-carved tiles. Check out her Swallow Trivet that features the line “Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life” – from poet Mary Oliver’s ‘The Summer Day.’ Did you know that the swallow symbolises hope, love, and new life?

Surrounded by a sustainable solid oak frame, with a tile inlay, Alchemy Trivets are available with a range of nature-inspired images and uplifting quotes. Could there be a lovelier way to protect your surfaces?

Statement glass

A surfer’s favourite wave is a glassy one – but you don’t have to be a wave rider to appreciate the impressive XL Tidal Wave by Dreya Glass. Maker, Dreya Bennett explains that “glass has a similar quality to water” and her handmade fused glass pieces beautifully reflect the colours and moods of the sea.

This striking circular piece symbolises the moon’s powerful influence on the tides. And its translucent quality means that it looks stunning in sunlight – when the sun shines on and through it – as it does with the sea. Ready to take your interiors up a notch?

Cornish art prints

Food lovers rejoice! HLS Designer, aka fine artist Hannah Louise Singleton, brings us her Seafood Platter Series of charmingly illustrated seafood. Prints of her original paintings, created with acrylic, watercolour, and fine illustration pen, feature mussels, mackerel, crab, and langoustines to name a few. Whether wall hung as an individual piece or grouped in a cluster, this is the perfect way to bring a beach house vibe to your kitchen. We think the blue and silver tones of the mussels and mackerel look great together.

Coastal-inspired glass art

Gifted artists have the ability to transport you to a special place or time with their work – and Claire Harris’ Handmade Fused Glass Agapanthus Curve does just that. The intricate design of her freestanding curve reconnects you to the Cornish coast and brings back memories of glistening seas, bluebird skies, and vivid blue agapanthus blooms along the shoreline.

Self-taught glass artist, Claire has developed her own unique style and uses layers of thin, crushed, and powdered glass to create texture. This piece is slim enough to place on a windowsill or narrow shelf – looking dreamlike in the morning sun or atmospheric in the evening with a flickering candle behind it.

Captivating photography

We’re big fans of Dr. Martin Raskovsky’s limited edition, Cliff II print from the Cliffscapes series. Taken while walking the Cornish coastline, eclectic artist Raskovsky has captured the essence of Cornwall in his delightful shot of clifftops scattered with wildflowers, rolling aquamarine waves, and blushing skies.

Raskovsky is also well known for his more abstract, digitally manipulated photographic art, which can be viewed on his website.

Vibrant wall art

Surfboard-shaped wall art that’s handcrafted from glass…YES please! World-renowned glass artist, Jo Downs has created the Artisan Kaleidoscope Surfboard which is a serious talking point. Ocean shades of liquid blue and green combine with mirrored glass, creating a spectacular shimmering effect. And measuring 87 x 28cm, this work of art makes a striking impression when mounted against a neutral wall.
