Cornish food to share with a loved one this February 14th
It’s been said many times before that food is the way to a man’s heart (or a woman’s for that matter!) And we think there’s a fair bit of truth in that, so ahead of Valentine’s Day, we bring you our guide to scrumptious Cornish food that’s made for sharing. Shop Cornish has selected our favourite love-themed sweet and savoury treats that might just score you a brownie point or two!
The perfect appetiser
High in nutrients and rumoured to have an aphrodisiac effect(!) why not order some Fresh Oysters from The Cornish Fish Co. to enjoy with your Valentine? It may be a cliché that oysters are the ‘food of love,’ but shellfish this fresh really does make a delicious starter or main. Supplied from a small inshore fleet of day boats operating from Looe and the surrounding harbours, The Cornish Fish Co. oysters are delivered directly to your home in under 36 hours from catch.
Roughly 6 oysters are recommended per person for a generous portion. Shuck straight from the shell with a little butter, salt and lemon juice or pan fry and serve with your favourite dressing – cooked oysters may be a little less daunting for some!
Bring romance to the cheeseboard
For a fun take on traditional, round Cornish Yarg, seek out a Heart Shaped Cornish Yarg from Lynher Dairies. This irresistible crumbly cheese is wrapped in hand-foraged nettles from hedgerow and field, and left to mature for 6 weeks.
At the time of writing, Lynher Dairies had 13 Heart Shaped Yargs in stock, but be quick as this cheese maker scooped Gold at the Taste of the West Awards 2022 and won Best in Class at the 2022 Artisan Cheese Awards! With an outstanding reputation like that, cheese sells fast!
Highly recommended too, are Lynher Dairies Reusable Beeswax Wraps that come in a good-looking green and cream Yarg print. A great way to store your cheese and a kinder option for the environment, meaning you can ditch the cling film.
The sweetest picnic
Pack a pair of champagne flutes, a picnic rug, and a freshly prepared Cornish Cream Tea from Cornish Cream – made extra special with a bottle of Cornish Sunset, a sparkling bubbly flavoured with the juice of fresh strawberries.
With 4 freshly baked scones, fine strawberry conserve, smooth Cornish clotted cream and a generous box of Smuggler’s Brew teabags, this is a cream tea to remember. Order online, for home delivery in an insulated, keep-cool travel pack.
Say it with personalised flapjacks
We’re loving the bespoke Valentine’s Gift Box from Cornish Flapjack Shack.
Pick 6 soft flapjacks from a tempting range of millionaires, strawberry and white chocolate, mint choc chip, original chocolate, or double chocolate – then choose a meaningful word, heart, or kiss that you’d like to be piped in chocolate onto each flapjack.
Cheese and gin for two
Make their Valentine’s evening with a lovely Cheese and Gin Gift Box from Cornish Cheese Co. – brimming with a 35cl bottle of Tarquin’s Dry Gin, 250g of tangy Cornish Yarg, 200g of creamy Cornish Brie, and a box of Peter’s Yard Original Sourdough Crispbreads.
These sensational cheeses are made on the Stansfield’s Farm on Bodmin Moor and frequently win international awards – with the Cornish Cheese Co’s most recent cheese creation, Cornish Brie, winning Bronze at the World Cheese Awards! Impressive stuff indeed.
